In March, City Council will sign legislation that will replace the present, temporary regulations for the placement and construction of streeteries. It is expected that the new rules will address important concerns about safety, accessibility, utilities access, and vehicular traffic. But the legislation ignores design—what streeteries look like, or, in other words, what Philadelphians will be looking at every day, forever.
The Design Advocacy Group (DAG) has already called for good design for streeteries in our November 24 letter to the Inquirer, and we are now preparing a set of recommended design guidelines, which we aim to publish in preliminary form by the time City Council acts. In the following months, we’ll present the guidelines in an attractive, easy-to-consult brochure (print and virtual).
As we begin to put together these recommendations, we want to hear from as many Philadelphians as possible. You are invited to be part of a virtual, roundtable discussion on Thursday, March 3 at 6 PM. We’ll share some photographs of what seems to look good—and what doesn’t, ask for your feedback, and a consult with a panel of select stakeholders, and then open the floor for YOUR ideas about how the streets and sidewalks of Philadelphia should look.
